SUTHAKAR RANTAU ABANG: The Ma’Daerah beach in Kerteh – a rich nesting ground for Green Turtles – is expected to be gazetted soon as the second turtle sanctuary in the peninsula after Rantau Abang. The Ma’Daerah working committee would submit a final report to the Terengganu Government within a month. Committee member Kamarruddin Ibrahim said: “We hope the 1.7km beach and surrounding 60ha could be gazetted by December.” Kamarruddin, who is also Turtle and Marine Ecosystem Centre (Tumec) head, said that although the place was called the Ma’Daerah Turtle Sanctuary Centre since June 1998, the place had not been gazetted. “Now, we will have legal powers to protect the area so that past mistakes in Rantau Abang will not be repeated. “We will not allow motels and restaurants to be constructed nearby as the noise will scare away turtles,” he said, adding the entry of visitors would also be controlled. Kamarruddin said that 302 Green Turtle nests accounting for 26,540 eggs and one Olive Ridley nest accounting for 54 eggs were recorded last year in Ma’Daerah and the surrounding areas of Cagar Hutan, Tanjung Batu and Rhu Kudung. He said petrochemical industries in Kerteh which were brightly lit up all night were believed to have a negative impact on turtle nesting. “We are fortunate that the Ma’Daerah beach is protected by a hill which is part of the Bukit Labohan Forest Reserve,” he said. Kamarruddin urged the private sector to help Tumec buy back Green Turtle eggs from the public and to help provide facilities at the Ma’Daerah Turtle Sanctuary Centre. “A few companies in Kerteh such as BP Petronas Acetyles Sdn Bhd and Dow Chemical have helped us tremendously through their sponsorship programmes,” he said.
