Guest guest
" Animal Liberation List " animal-lib-nsw Wednesday, April 16, 2003 1:34 PM LIBERATE: Egg Labelling / Flying Fox Colony http://us.click./2CXtTB/ca0FAA/i5gGAA/WfTolB/TM EGG LABELLING Correct and accurate labelling of battery cage eggs should now be in force through all supermarkets, however we have found that not all cartons display the words 'Cage Eggs' as they should. National standards are that the words 'Cage Eggs' must appear on the front panel of the carton. The print should be at least 6mm in height. We are intending to discuss this further with the supermarkets and the egg suppliers, however to do this we require a snapshot of the current status across Australian supermarkets. If you have the time and are willing to assist us we would be most grateful if you could download a form and complete the details of carton labelling at your supermarket. Note that the survey is to be completed ONLY for cage eggs (not free range or barn laid) and needs to be returned by 21/4/03 to: Animals Australia, PO Box 1023, Collingwood VIC 3066. Thank you for your help! It is interesting to note that their application to move the colony includes no planning to indicate where the colony will end up. Widely publicised attempts to move a flying fox colony from Melbourne Botanic Gardens, an act which was never determined a controlled action under EPBC and never properly assessed by the Federal Government, has achieved highly questionable conservation outcomes. It is essential that in this case the Minister determines this action a 'controlled action' in order to ensure that there will be no significant impact on the species. We urge you to comment on this latest proposal to re-locate a large number of a vulnerable species on the basis that their proximity causes " distress to nearby residents " . The Threatened Species Scientific Committee's advice when listing this species noted that " Since the mid-1980s, the population of the Spectacled Flying-fox has decreased by almost 80 per cent. More alarmingly, the population was recorded as having declined by 35 per cent over two years, between 1998 and 2000. Significant threats continue, and losses due to human activities are high. " Please circulate this to anyone you think may have comments to submit. See Environment Australia's website for further details of the proposal: http://www.ea.gov.au/cgi-bin/epbc/epbc_ap.pl?name=show_document & document_id=9603\ & proposal_id=1013 Or if you have trouble opening the document try through: http://www.ea.gov.au/cgi-bin/epbc/epbc_ap.pl The referral was lodged 10th April 2003, and the public comment period is open for 30 days. Should you require further information, don't hesitate to contact HSI or Environment Australia.
