A helping hand for leatherbacks

BY K. SUTHAKAR

RANTAU ABANG: Plans are underway to help whatever may remain of the leatherback

turtles should they come to nest here between next month and October.

The Turtle and Marine Ecosystem Centre (Tumec) based here will try to remove

any obstacles to the nesting of leatherbacks, which are categorised as

critically endangered.

Tumec head Kamarruddin Ibrahim said hindrances to the landing of turtles such

as stingray nets would be removed.

“Some fishermen are still using them although they have been banned since 1990

as turtles can get entangled in them and die from suffocation,” he said in an

interview yesterday.

From May 1, Tumec will embark on intense patrols of the beach along the 20km

stretch from Kuala Gong Balai to Tanjung Jara, which includes the 14km Rantau

Abang beach.

It will distribute posters to fishermen seeking their co-operation to inform

the authorities if they find any turtle nests.

It will also pay RM2.50 for each egg collected by the public compared to RM1.80

previously.

Kamarruddin said he expected more leatherback nestings this year compared to

just three reported last year by the Fisheries Department.

“The number of nests have gone up and down somewhat every alternate year and we

are hoping for more nests now.

The Star reported last month that the famed Rantau Abang turtle sanctuary had

practically ceased to be a nesting place for leatherbacks.

There were close to 10,000 landings in the 1960s.
