Bandar Lampung, Lampung, March 27 (ANTARA) - Hundreds of wild elephants were expected to be killed in South Bukit Barisan National Parks (TNBBS) and its surrounding areas in Lampung since 1993, an official said here. Head of the TNBBS Tamen Sitorus said Thursday that a team of against Tiger, Rhinoceros and Elephant hunting which carried out an investigation and monitoring activities of hunting and trading wild elephants suspected that three tons of elephant trunks had been traded illegally. " The team also found out that hundreds of tigers and rhinoceroses were killed, and some were exported illegally, " he said. According to him, the killing of the wild animals were also prompted by a belief that the animals had health restorative power. He said the illegal activities affected the population of the wild animals which had dropped drastically. " There are some wild animals left and in a very bad condition, " Tamen, who was accompanied by some members of the organization, added. However, he said his side, police and stakeholders had formed the team earlier this year and carried out law enforcement in the area.
