ACTION ALERT: Save Grey Wolves in Northern BC

Hello all,

Please take the time to send a message to save the

grey wolves in BC Canada.

This hunter-funded wildlife managment activity is

focused in the Muskwa Kechika park to recreate

grassland and lower ungulate predation (see below for

more). Please make sure you cc your message to the

Raincoast Conservation Society

(greatbear) AND include your name and

address or your letter may not be considered.

I hope everyone is enjoying spring. . .if it has

arrived to your area. We are currently enjoying

unaturally warm weather and our snow is almost gone :(

All the best,

Danielle

HELP CLOSE THE OPEN SEASON ON BC´S GREY WOLVES

March 27, 2003

Synopsis:

Once again, biologists from British Columbia's

Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection are

planning to systematically kill wolves at the behest

of the trophy hunting lobby; this time their

regressive wildlife management is focused on the

6.3-million-hectare Muskwa-Kechika park in the

northern Rockies wilderness. The plan would see wolves

to be shot and trapped year-round, increasing the bag

limit from three wolves to 10. These measures, as well

as a proposal to burn 120 square kilometres a year in

the area, are in addition to the sterilization last

month of 13 wolves in five packs in the

Muskwa-Kechika.

The two-pronged goal is to create grassland habitat

while reducing natural predation of ungulates, such as

Rocky Mountain elk, Stone's mountain sheep, woodland

caribou and moose, all species heavily sought after by

resident and foreign hunters. This is part of a

hunter-funded experiment to increase ungulates in the

Muskwa-Kechika - a move designed to generate more

big-game animals for hunters.

Take Action:

Please email, write, or call Pierre Johnstone, the

ministry biologist who is considering this option, at

pierre.johnstone, and cc Minister

Joyce Murray at joyce.murray.mla, voicing

your opposition to this regressive policy. Public

input will be considered until March 31, 2003.
