Guest guest
Ape Alliance apeally Tuesday, February 11, 2003 11:02 AM Deportation of worn-out zoo apes. Dear friends, you may remember that the Zoo in Berlin has planned to send its five worn-out chimps to a zoo in China(background is obviously the loan of a panda bear and the will for a good relationship with the Chinese government). After six months of negotiations between Pro Wildlife and the zoo and documentation of maltreatment of animals in two distinct Chinese zoos, which were planned as destination, today the Zoo Berlin held a press conference and announced they would keep the five chimps and build a new enclosure. Good news! It is a common practice of (not only) German zoos to breed apes, big cats, bears etc. as attraction for the public and later to deport the adult animals to zoos, safariparks and circusses even in countries with worst conditions. In 1997 three orangutans from Hanover didn't survive the deportation to Argentina, and one chimp from Berlin died two weeks after he was shipped to a zoo in Uzbekistan. Every year, many animals from western zoos face a similar fate. At present, China is pretty much " en vogue " , as the demand of their zoos, safariparks and circusses is endless. Maybe the Berlin case might be helpful to put pressure on zoos with similar considerations. Best, Sandra --------------- Pro Wildlife e.V.
