In the wake of the department's increased vigilance for the illegal sale of exotic animal meat to seafood restaurants during the upcoming Chinese New Year season, officers here received a tip-off and raided a house in Permas Jaya, Johor Baru, where a big collection of skeletal parts of tigers were found. Tigers are listed as a protected and endangered species. According to the department's deputy director of legal and enforcement division, Abdul Jalal Kasim, the tiger parts, including bones, claws, paws, fangs, were equivalent to that belonging to five tigers, with a street value of RM100,000. “We believe that two of the tigers were killed in the wild here while the rest are from Indonesia,'' he said yesterday. Jalal said his officers also seized a pair of elephant tusks and 1.2kg of preserved wild boar bile from the 58-year-old man detained in the 12.15am raid. “We also have reasons to believe the suspect could be acting as a middleman to smuggle these animal parts to China, Taiwan and Hong Kong for the traditional Chinese medicine market,'' he said, adding that the skeletal parts of the tigers weighed 33.7kg. The suspect has been released on bail of RM5,000 and would be charged in court on Feb 7, he said. The department's director, Misliah Mohamad Basir, said in another case on Jan 24, an Indian national was caught trying to smuggle in four tiger pelts, three dried jackal heads and some tiger claws worth a total of RM100,000 via the KL International Airport. She said the man, who escaped from the airport after Customs officials told him to open the plastic containing the items, flew in from India. Misliah said the total amount recovered from the two cases were RM200,000, the biggest seizure for the department since skeletal parts of two tigers and 700 pangolins were seized in Segamat last year. <p> ________________________ Your one-stop information portal: The Star Online http://thestar.com.my http://biz.thestar.com.my http://classifieds.thestar.com.my http://cards.thestar.com.my http://search.thestar.com.my http://star-motoring.com http://star-space.com http://star-jobs.com http://star-ecentral.com http://star-techcentral.com 1995-2002 Star Publications (Malaysia) Bhd.
