Guest guest
David Byrne, Esq., EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection 200, rue de la Loi B-1049 Brussels Belgium Dear Sir, The trade in dog and cat fur I write in support of the campaign by the Humane Society International and the efforts of Struan Stevenson, MEP, to ban the import of dog and cat fur into the European Union and to end the trade in such products within the Community. Whilst recognising that there is a range of opinion on many moral and ethical issues, I feel that this trade takes us beyond that which is acceptable in a civilised society. The poor conditions in which the dogs and cats are bred, the cruelty regularly involved in their slaughter, and the misleading way in which the end-products are often labelled combine to demonstrate that this is a heartless and totally unnecessary industry. It has no place in the Europe that we wish to build for our children and we should not tolerate its existence elsewhere, still less support it through our trade. I urge you to act to bring Europe into line with the recent move by the United States of America to ban trade in these items and thus to end the activities that depend on it. There are many issues of animal welfare that interact with your responsibility for Health and Consumer Protection and I support you and all those within the Commission who strive towards a balanced, integrated approach to production and trade within the context of world-wide human and environmental needs. With thanks for your work on our behalf in Health and Consumer Protection, Yours faithfully,
