Poem about pet rabbits being illegal in Queensland

This poem was sent to me by the author, Fluffy the rabbit, with

some help from Fluffy's human friends.

Pet rabbits are illegal in Queensland Australia (even if they are

neutered and microchipped). The Queensland Government is

reviewing the status of pet rabbits but a change in legislation in the

near future is not expected. I have received emails from people within

Australia and from people overseas who wished to bring

their pet rabbit to Queensland as they were migrating to Queensland.

Most people have to leave their pet rabbits behind when

migrating to Queensland because of Queensland's

archaic laws concerning pet rabbits.

These laws include fines of thousands of dollars

and a possible jail sentence for having a pet rabbit.

Pet rabbits are Queensland's most prolific illegal pet.

People who need vet treatment for their rabbits place

themselves, their rabbits and their vets in danger

as they are having an illegal animal treated.

This is fact, not fiction.

A Plea From Fluffy The Rabbit

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Premier of Queensland,
I know this must be a surprise,
for there can't be many rabbits,
that can E-mail I surmise.
But I am a special rabbit,
not one you might find in the wild,
a domestic fluffy rabbit,
belonging to a special child.
Her name is Alexandra,
a loving little girl,
still young enough to believe that,
this is still a perfect world,
where right is right, and wrong is wrong,
and there are no shades of gray,
I wonder sir if you recall,
how it felt to be that age?
When Santa Clause existed,
and wishes could come true,
well perhaps those wishes still could sir,
with the help of men like you.
You see her wish is very simple,
and within your power to grant,
she wishes I could move to Queensland,
although she's told ' I can't.'
Her family will move there,
in April or there about,
but you have legislation,
to keep us rabbits out,
and I understand your reasons,
my ancestors ran amok,
infesting most of Queensland,
and destroying farmers crops.
But I've been desexed and micro chipped,
I'm as harmless as can be,
Dear Premier of Queensland,
won't you listen to her plea?
I know I'm just a rabbit sir,
and you view me as 'a threat,'
but to her I'm friend and confidante,
more like family than pet.
Tell me sir could you explain,
in all good conscience why,
a rabbit that is spayed and tagged,
must be condemned to die?
I'm not trying to be dramatic,
this is really how it is,
I move with them or I must die,
I have nowhere else to live.
Could you look at her tear stained face,
and wipe away her tears,
saying she must now forget,
this friend she's loved for years?
I don't believe that in your heart sir
you could be that cruel,
but this sir is the very thing,
her mother will have to do
unless you grant exception,
for me to move with them,
and grant a loving child's wish,
that she can keep her friend.
A friend so cute and fluffy,
white with specks of black,
that loves their tummy tickled,
while I'm lying on my back.
I'm just a bunny rabbit sir,
while you're a powerful man,
we pray that you'll show mercy sir,
for my life is in your hands.
By Fluffy The Rabbit.
