By Makoto Oda

Staff Writer

Dec. 28, 2002

cheat subsidies under a program aimed at helping an industry hit hard by

the outbreak of mad cow disease illustrated the moral hazard of Japan's

corporate society.

illegal practices must pay a hefty price if found out.

The scandal caused the collapse of one of the companies -- Snow Brand Food

Inc. Following the revelations of the scandals, supermarkets and other

retailers removed the two companies' products from store shelves while

angry consumers boycotted their products.
