NATURE / ANIMALS, ENDANGERED SPECIES

Officials raid illegal `nursery' for animals

Nigerian security agents in the northern city of Kano

have raided a Lebanese-owned warehouse believed to be

used in the rearing of endangered species to be

smuggled illegally to Europe and Asia.

State Security Service agents swooped on the warehouse

owned by Paul Rad and searched it, after which they

found two apes of the gorilla species and a rare breed

of tortoise, according to nearby residents.

Junior Environment Minister Ime Okopido, who ordered

the search, said security reports showed the warehouse

owner had been involved in illegal smuggling of these

endangered species for 10 years, using Kano

international airport.

Gorillas and snakes were the main species reared in

the warehouse for export to Europe and Asia.

Smuggling of all animals is officially illegal in

Nigeria.
