What do other countries do with seized animals, reptiles, amphibians and others.

I would like to hear from the experts on this matter. Thank you.

Seized animals sold to public

By IAN MCINTYRE

KANGAR: As soon as word got around that more than 2,000 animals had been seized

by the authorities on Monday, the Customs Department was deluged with offers by

the public to buy them.

A Customs spokesman said that up to yesterday, most of the seized animals had

been sold.

“The decision to sell the captured animals was made on compassionate grounds.

“We have clauses under the Customs Act 1967 to sell the animals even if there

is an on-going investigation on the matter.

“Furthermore, the department is not specialised to take care of the

animals, & #8217; & #8217; he added.

The animals were “found” during a routine check on a lorry by the police

anti-smuggling unit (UPP) at KM21, Jalan Kubang Tiga in Chuping, near the

Malaysian-Thai border on Monday.

The bizarre haul included 20 puppies, 990 lizards, 30 snakes, 1,000 spiders,

100 centipedes and 200 scorpions.

Initial investigations showed the 43-year-old lorry driver did not have any

import permits from the state veterinary department and that the items seized

were not declared at the border entry points.

Asked how Customs would manage the income derived from the sale of the animals,

the spokesman said the lorry driver had been given one month to obtain an import

permit from the state veterinary department.

“If he is able to get the permit, the money from the sales will be handed to

him,” he said.
