The high school reported the incident to the police after a school assistant who went to the site to feed the chicks discovered the scene around 3 p.m. The school was closed Thursday for a prefectural holiday, they said. The 19-year-old assistant noticed nothing unusual when going around noon to the unlocked school building where the chicks were kept, the police said. The chicks, around 20 days old, were kept at the school to be used in experiments or eventually to be eaten, they said.
