The WAZA director, Peter Dollinger, makes a good point, but I think it's

fair to say there are sleaze buckets in the zoo world as well as in the

world at general.

 

Therefore outcome of the Taiping 4 case is so critical. And not just

sending those 4 gorilla babies back to Africa, but what happens to the

parties involved in this criminal act.

 

If Ibadan and Taiping Zoos, and whoever else was involved, get a slap on the

wrist, Peter's right - more gorillas will be slaughtered to feed this trade,

since it won't seem like such a big deal or high risk ...

 

However, if criminal prosectutions of the guilty parties are pursued

vigorously, as they should, a clear message will be sent that such

activities won't be tolerated.

In the recent email correspondence about these four gorillas, it was

repeatedly

stated that sending the Taiping four to a zoo would be a bad signal,

encouraging

other zoos to engage in illegal activities.

 

However, if anybody has sent out negative signals, it was the Nigerian

Minister

who told the world that one could make 1.6 million Dollars by poaching

four young gorillas. Had until now gorilla babies been rather the bycatch

of meat hunt, they may become the main taget now.
