CM: Marine parks will not displace fishing communities

MUGUNTAN VANAR and RUBEN SARIO at the Sabah State Assembly Thursday

MARINE parks which are being gazetted in various parts of the state will not

displace fishing communities living in the area, said Chief Minister Datuk Chong

Kah Kiat.

Dispelling concerns by government backbenchers, he said Sabah Parks, which

would be managing such parks, would assist the fishing community to further

improve their socio-economic conditions.

Chong said the gazetting of marine parks was aimed at improving income and job

opportunities for locals in the area through proper management of marine

resources, using environmentally-friendly methods.

He said the Government planned to set up a marine park in Sabah & #8217;s

northern Kudat region which would involve 50 islands in the waters around Marudu

Bay that bordered Sabah & #8217;s Exclusive Economic Zone in the Balabac Straits

between the Sulu Sea and South China Sea.

He explained that the proposed marine park would be the largest after the

soon-to-be launched Tun Sakaran Marine Park, off Semporna, and the existing

Turtle Island Park, off Sandakan, and Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, off Kota

Kinabalu.

To another question, Assistant Tourism, Environment Development, Science and

Technology Minister Datuk Karim Bujang said pollution along the Kinabatangan

River was still within “acceptable levels. & #8217; & #8217;

He said that a special pollution monitoring committee headed by the

Kinabatangan district officer continuously monitored discharge by oil palm

plantations and palm oil factories along the river.
