Austral Enterprises Bhd senior plantation manager Nik Mohd Abdul Nasser said the biological control experiment was being conducted at the 31,000ha plantation, 170km south of here. & #147;We have imported 12 specially trained owls from Sumatra and released them into our plantation here to see their effectiveness in controlling the rat population, & #148; he said in a telephone interview. & #147;This is the first time barn owls, which make effective hunters, are being used on such a large scale. & #147;A special shelter will be built on every 10ha of land for the owls to rest after doing their work, & #148; he said, adding that some 3,100 shelters would be built. He said many plantations now rely on chemicals to poison the rats. & #147;However, the authorities have expressed concern over the serious harm that long-term use of poisons can have on the land and water systems, and plantations have been asked to seek a better alternative. & #148; Nik Mohd said a lot of money had to be invested in the experiment to ensure the owls in the plantation were well taken care of. & #147;A conducive environment must be created inside the plantation so that the owls will be able to multiply successfully and not stray from the area, & #146; & #146; he said. <p> ________________________ Your one-stop information portal: The Star Online http://thestar.com.my http://biz.thestar.com.my http://classifieds.thestar.com.my http://cards.thestar.com.my http://search.thestar.com.my http://star-motoring.com http://star-space.com http://star-jobs.com http://star-ecentral.com http://star-techcentral.com 1995-2002 Star Publications (Malaysia) Bhd.
