Conservation of forests pays, says official

KUCHING: Forest conservation is a viable investment as its renewable resources

offer great development potential, said Sarawak Assistant Minister of Planning

and Resource Management Datuk Alfred Yap Chin Loi.

He said forests could deliver goods and services as well as provide a good

living environment if managed properly.

& #147;There is now increasing pressure on forestry resources in the region but

no national or sub-regional instrument that deals with forests in a balanced and

holistic way, & #146; & #146; he said when opening the third Brunei/Indonesia/

Malaysia/Philippines-East Asean Growth Area working group, meeting on forestry

and environment here yesterday.

Yap said there was a need to balance the development and conservation of the

forest and environment to enhance their value to meet the economic, cultural and

social needs of the people.

& #147;An effective national, regional and sub-regional mechanism to promote the

management, conservation and sustainable development of forest and environment

is of utmost importance. & #148;

He said economic interaction and co-operation among the East Asean Growth Area

members in forestry and environment must be enhanced.

Yap said East Asean Growth Area members had carried out forestry projects,

including a joint study on the establishment of a plant, eco-tourism development

and setting up of a rattan resources and production centre.

He said the East Asean Growth Area members had worked together in managing the

environment such as waste management; toxic waste collection, treatment and

disposal; waste transportation management; and trans-boundary movement of toxic

waste.

& #147;We have to adopt processes that are sustainable and environment-friendly

to avoid costs associated with environmental degradation. & #148;

Yap said the proximity of borders required East Asean Growth Area members to

address pollution problems from the national and regional perspectives.
