Of the three bottlenose dolphins inseminated artificially in July, two have been confirmed pregnant. They are Surimu, about 36 years old and the oldest dolphin in captivity in Japan, and Meru, about 17. The fetuses are about 12 cm long and growing steadily, the institute said. The dolphins are expected to give birth around July. There have been successful cases of artificially inseminated dolphins giving birth in Hong Kong and the United States. " In the future, (this technique) can be applied to preserve whale species that face the danger of extinction, " an institute official said. The Japan Times: Oct. 23, 2002 © All rights reserved Y!
