Guest guest
Tracking the tiger trade. 10/18/2002 Bangkok Post P12 © 2002 The Post Publishing Co. Ltd. . In Thailand the body of a tiger sells, gramme for gramme, for the same price as cocaine. Unsurprisingly then, the signs of the Indochinese tigers' dwindling population is visible everywhere - they are now merely clinging to existence. The current situation is a direct result of unrelenting poaching, not only of the tigers, but their food sources as well. This week, Animal Planet goes undercover and into the unsettling world of animal poaching. Airing on UBC 44 as part of Animal Planet Safari, Eye of the Tiger hits screens on Mon, Oct 21 at 9pm and is repeated the following day at 9:30am. The programme begins by taking you into Thai villages that live along forest fringes to meet the poachers who live off the death of animals. Though they are now considered lawbreakers, they learned how to provide for their families from their parents, who survived by hunting and gathering in the forest. This is the only way of life they have ever known. WildAid, an organisation that combats the trafficking of wildlife around the world, has stepped in to help educate the villagers on conservation and bring them over to their side. Eye of the Tiger also follows Steve Galster, co-director of WildAid, as he ventures into the shops of Bangkok that are selling animal contraband. With the use of special hidden cameras, you will witness first-hand the shopkeepers who will stop at nothing to make a profit by supplying animal parts illegally, despite the devastation it causes to the natural world.
