India today signed an agreement with the World Bank for a $ 108 millions credit (equivalent to Rs. 531.36 crores) for the Andhra Pradesh community forest management project. The project will be implemented in 14 districts with high poverty incidence in the forest areas of northern, coastal and southern belts of the State with a total of 3.86 million hectares of forest land. The project is a sequel to Andhra Pradesh forestry project which was approved in February 1994 for a credit line from the International Development Agency (IDA), the soft lending window of the World Bank, of $ 77.4 millions. The project closed as scheduled on September 30, 2000, and the amount was fully disbursed.
