OUTBREAK

October 8, 2002

Agence France Presse

SEOUL- South Korean health authorities on Tuesday,

according to agriculture ministry officials, began

slaughtering more than 1,000 pigs after confirming an

outbreak of cholera at a local livestock farm.

The ministry said some of 1,300 pigs at a farm on

Ganghwa, an island off the western port of Incheon,

were found to have the infectious disease.

Ministry official Cho Nam-Nan was quoted as telling

AFP that, " The mass-killing has started at the pig

farm and its surroundings to contain the cholera.

sMovements of animals and humans coming in and out of

the island were strictly restricted as well. "

Two bridges link the island, famous for producing

ginseng, to Incheon, around 40 kilometers (25 miles)

from Seoul.
