AUSTRALIA PUTS FREEZE ON EXPORTS OF LIVE SHEEP

SYDNEY - Australia placed a moratorium on live sheep exports from a

southern port yesterday after another shipment exceeded acceptable mortality

levels.

Around 2400 sheep died on board the Al Shuwaikh, 3.08 per cent of a cargo

of 75,000 to 85,000 sheep bound for the Middle East, Agriculture Minister

Warren Truss and industry body LiveCorp said.

It was the fifth shipment in the past three months to record unacceptable

losses of more than 2 per cent, Truss said.

" The recent spate of deaths is intolerable and the Government expects

immediate action to ensure animal welfare standards are at a consistently

high level, " he said.

The moratorium, on shipments from the port of Portland in Victoria, would

last until the end of the Northern Hemisphere summer at the end of

thismonth, LiveCorp said.

LiveCorp chief executive Kevin Shiell said the deaths were caused by a

combination of stress at Portland feedlots which caused early mortalities,

a failure-to-eat syndrome which affects a small proportion of animals on any

shipment, and heat stress in the Middle East.

The recent voyage of the Al Shuwaikh had been allowed to go ahead only

after the Australian Quarantine Inspection Service imposed extra conditions,

including a requirement that a Government vet accompany the animals, Truss

said.

The Independent Reference Group would reconvene this week to advise on ways

to improve the live trade's animal welfare record.

Comprehensive risk management practices were being progressively introduced

covering heat stress issues for each consignment, Shiell said.

A computer model had been introduced to monitor voyages, taking account of

the types of stock, time of year and weather conditions.

HEAVY METAL HEART - JUDAS PRIEST

Headbangers with a heart! British heavy metal legends Judas Priest,

who just finished a world tour that took them across Australia for the first

time,

are best known for rocking tracks like 'Breaking the Law' and for their

anthem 'Hell Bent for Leather'. But the title of this song hit a sour note

with the biggest animal rights group in the world, People for the Ethical

Treatment of Animals (PETA), and spurred them to write to the rockers,

urging them to shed animal skins and consider singing a different tune:

'Hell Bent for Pleather'.

PETA had hoped for a response after the band finished their tour, but

amazingly, Judas Priest faxed back right away to explain that the band are

all animal lovers and 'their stage clothes are not made from real leather -

-they are made from a synthetic material that looks like leather'.

Thrilled at the news that the metal heads wear their hearts on their

sleeves, PETA have posted a photo of the band in their faux finery on its

pro-vinyl Web site, which also features other celebrities like Britney

Spears, Pamela Anderson, Janet Jackson and Catherine Zeta-Jones in

animal-friendly attire.

Hey, did you think those long black trenchcoats in 'The Matrix' looked

pretty cool? They're Pleather too!!
