RE: Attention: John Wedderburn

Dear Dr. Wedderburn,

I am wondering if you can help me locate scholars in Asia or scholars doing

studies on Asia in the area of Human-Animal Studies.

Here is a description of the project for which I am requesting contacts:

As editor of Society and Animals: Journal of Human-Animal Studies, I am

launching a book series also on HAS through the publisher of S & A, Brill

Publications. Brill has a special interest in Asian studies.

I am exploring the possibility of publishing a reader on HAS in the Asian

setting --- problems local to the area, issues involved in the development

of HAS in that cultural setting. It would not be a presentation of Western

ideas for an Asian audience. It could be as broad in scope as S & A, which

currently publishes papers from disciplines in the social sciences and the

humanities. As practical, the geographical and cultural scope could be

confined to particular countries or regions of Asia.

The purpose of the book would be to promote a home-grown HAS, an academic

field that would provide support for policy changes in the interests of

helping nonhuman animals in Asia.

At the moment I envision 3-4 articles from each of 3-4 areas of Asia. I am

looking for prospective coeditors and contributors. For the most part,

papers would be unpublished studies, although they could be versions of

presentations. Perhaps the book could be published in two languages or at

least with abstracts in a second language.

I have a small grant to support this project. Monies could be used to pay

coeditors, promote the book through a gathering or through free distribution

of copies to Asian university libraries. Somewhat more ambitiously, we could

have a meeting of the contributors in which drafts were presented and

critiqued before the publication. The volume could then contain some

discussion of the papers.
