Guest guest
White Bengal tigers roam at open zoo. 10/01/2002 Bangkok Post © 2002 Rare cats on loan from Nashville, US Cherdsak Saengthongcharoen Chong Buri Six new Bengal tigers, including five rare white tigers, have been set free in the cat complex at Khao Khiew open zoo in Chon Buri. The big cats are on loan from the Nashville Zoo, Tennessee, under a Thai-US animal exchange programme. A white tiger is not an albino, but a rare colour phase of the Bengal tiger. How often they occur in the wild is unclear. They are rare because they only occur when two tigers mate and both carry the gene for white colouring. All white tigers living in captivity are thought to be descended from a male white tiger, named Mohan, captured in 1951 by the maharaja of Rewa. Pisit na Phattalung, director of the Zoological Park Organisation, said there were only about 200 white tigers in zoos, including two males and four females in Thailand. The new white tigers were five years' old and were ready for mating, he said. The female generally gave birth to 2-4 cubs at a time.
