Guest guest
Ref. Your e-mail to the Ministry of Fisheries The Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries is an agency under the Ministry of Fisheries and is responsible for the management of fisheries and sea mammals in Norwegian waters. In the matter of the killer whale Keiko the Directorate has stated: - The killer whale Keiko shall not be kept in captivity - He shall not be commercially exploited - He shall not be in conflict with other interests and boattraffic. The Directorate of Fisheries supports the efforts on trying to put the killer whale Keiko back to the wild, as long as the Free Willy/Keiko Foundation has the recourses to care for him, and is cooperating with local animal welfare authorities and the municipality. There has been issued a restricted area around Keiko. This means that it is forbidden for people and boats to approach the killer whale, and keep a distance of 150 feet. The intension is to let him have some space and to avoid stress, and give the Foundation the possibilty to continue their project. So far people respects this regulation.
