Guest guest
Hi, If anyone has time to write to Prime Minister Tony Blair in Britain, and ask that hunting be banned in Britain, please do so. I believe Australia (NSW) recently legalised hunting animals with dogs so a ban on hunting in Britain would help our cause in our continuing efforts to ban hunting animals with dogs here. Kind regards, Marguerite Update - Campaign to Ban Hunting (Britain) League Against Cruel Sports 20th Sep 02 The Countryside Alliance March for hunting takes place this weekend and the debate on hunting is back in the public spotlight. We will be working hard to ensure that our point of view gets across to viewers, listeners and readers of the media over the next few days. The hunters have desperately sought to convince the public that the march is about wider rural concerns in an attempt to improve the numbers marching on Sunday. However, nobody should be fooled by this. The Countryside Alliance is first and foremost about hunting. This is their attempt to deflect the government away from the inevitable ban on hunting which will come if Government promises are kept. Also, last week, Alun Michael, the minister in charge of the hunting issue, held a series of hearings on the hunting to inform what he decides to next .. The evidence presented to the government last week confirms what we have always known, that hunting is cruel, it is unnecessary and it plays no role in controlling foxes. Hunting Alliance offers concessions Interestingly evidence presented by scientists from the Game Conservancy Trust, invited to the hearings at the nomination of the Countryside Alliance, indicates a series of major concessions. Dr Jonathan Reynolds's paper in session 1C says that " Hunting with dogs has no utility to control hare numbers because bags are typically small. " and that " Mink hunting has little apparent utility in this context. Bags are typically small and disturbance of otters is a particular conservation concern. " While the League is delighted at these concessions, we will not make any compromise ourselves. Only a total ban on hunting with dogs is acceptable. Nothing else satisfies the moral case against cruelty and the scientific evidence that hunting is cruel, unnecessary and has no utility value in the countryside. " See the hearings on video and read the evidence submitted at the DEFRA website at www.defra.gov.uk Keep up to date with the campaign and our latest press releases at our website www.league.uk.com Sign the online petition and get more information at the www.banhunting.com website Write to or email your MP and Tony Blair, more details are in the political section of the League website. Thanks Dave Ward Campaign Co-ordinator League Against Cruel Sports P.S. Don't be too disheartened by the extensive media coverage that the hunters will get this weekend. The people who really matter, the general public and their representatives in Parliament, MPs continue to strongly support our campaign for a ban. Despite the vocal minority on the streets of London this weekend, they remain a minority and the majority view, that hunting must be banned will prevail in the end. ---------- ----
