Geoffrey William Harold Day (33) was fined $600 after admitting keeping an injured animal in unnecessary pain. The court was told police went to Day's farm on March 29 on other matters and found dead stock, recumbent animals and insufficient feed. An Environment Southland compliance officer was at the property the same day investigating reports of stock being grazed on the waterways. That officer noted a Friesian bull, in poor condition, hobbling on three legs. A vet destroyed the animal. Further investigation revealed Day was contacted by the SPCA on January 4 and advised to destroy the injured bull which had broken a leg. The leg later fell off. On January 20, Day told the SPCA the injured bull had been destroyed. Defence lawyer Phil McDonald said Day had sought veterinary advice and had splinted the animal's leg. He had been intending to destroy the animal after the leg fell off, but had been busy. Judge Noel Walsh declined an application for name suppression. - NZPA - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - MEDIA RELEASE FROM THE OFFICE OF RICHARD JONES MLC 19 September 2002 COUNTRY LABOR CREMATES OUR NATIONAL SYMBOL Country Labor confirmed today that it is completely out of touch with community sentiment and the impacts of the drought in rural NSW by hosting a Kangaroo BBQ at State Parliament today. " When so many kangaroos are dying from the drought and they are being shot in record numbers, leading to calls from conservation groups for a moratorium on the killing of kangaroos, it is extraordinarily inappropriate for the parliament to be hosting ritual burning of our national symbol " Mr Jones said. " Having a well-publicised " roo cook-up " will disgust many people in NSW, perhaps internationally. It goes to show how out of touch NSW politicians are with the sentiment towards our national symbol " . " There is significant evidence that some kangaroo populations no longer reflect the size, age and weight characteristics typical of strong viable populations, and little is known about the long-term genetic effects of commercial killing programs " . " In fact, wildlife researcher Dr Graham Caughle recommended that commercial shooting should not occur at times of drought " . " Coles and other outlets should be applauded for refusing to stock kangaroo meat which has been shown to be potentially harmful to eat, especially if undercooked. A Government sponsored report, developed in collaboration with veterinary and wildlife professional bodies, stated that the recent series of diseases and mass mortalities in wild fauna, and emerging diseases of wildlife in Australia, have demonstrated the growing importance of wildlife disease as threats to biodiversity, human health, agriculture and trade " . " The drought and the commercial and illegal killing of red kangaroos, in particular, has the potential to severely deplete the population, putting them at risk. We have to learn the lessons from what happened to whales in the 1960s when Australia almost totally wiped out whale populations on the east and west coast, and to koalas in the 1920s when skin exports to the USA almost caused koalas to become extinct " . " Whales and koalas are worth far more for tourism today than when they were being killed and the same applies to kangaroos " . " If Country Labor continues to promote the kangaroo industry at a time of severe drought, the Carr Government will lose significant support from green voters and animal lovers " concluded Mr Jones.
