Guest guest
GREYHOUND ACTION INTERNATIONAL UPDATE Greyhound Action International has been highlighting and working towards ending the cruel trade in greyhounds exported to Vietnam, Korea, Macau and China. The horror and cruelty endured by dogs in such countries has been exposed world-wide, yet greyhounds from Australia are increasingly being exported to Asia. We therefore have called upon the Australian government, in particular, Warren Truss the minister for live exports, to stop the export of greyhounds to Asia. We have also urged the World Greyhound Racing Federation and the Australian racing authorities not to promote or support the export of greyhounds to Asia. They have chosen to turn a blind eye to the atrocities and have written a statement to the effect, that they are satisfied with the provisions in place in Vietnam and Macau. This statement has been made in the knowledge that there are no opportunities or rehoming programmes for greyhounds raced in Asia. They are, no doubt, fuelling the barbaric trade in dog meat. For this reason, from the week beginning the 2nd of september, a series of demonstrations were held in London, Ireland and Australia in protest of the savage treatment of greyhounds exported to Asia. Over 20,000 coloured leaflets were distributed to the general public. Radio stations in the UK and Ireland covered the protest. Leaflets were distributed to individuals in the BBC and the BBC World Service buildings, which are situated next to the Australian High Commission in Strand. Press release packages were sent to all national and several local newspapers. The protest in Australia was the first ever demonstration held highlighting the suffering of greyhounds in Australia as well as in Asia. We would like to express our many thanks and gratitude to all the groups, organisations and individuals that have been supportive. We shall continue in the fight to stop the suffering and the export of greyhounds to Asia.
