MURALI SEREMBAN: Eleven ostriches and an emu, worth an estimated RM70,000, are believed to have been clobbered to death at a show farm which is a popular tourist spot here. Jelita Impian farm owner S.S. Abraham, 52, said he was distraught upon discovering the birds with their heads smashed when he went to his farm in Jalan Pantai at 8am yesterday. " I immediately lodged reports at the Pantai police station and to the state Veterinary Services Department, " he said. Abraham said the birds were trained to display racing skills at the farm for the last three years. " I am shocked and disgusted over the incident. Why would the perpetrators attack the innocent birds? " he asked. He said a guard and two workers were at the farm when the birds were purportedly attacked between 3am and 5am. Abraham said the birds, costing between RM5,000 and RM6,000 each, were imported from South Africa. OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Khalid Abu Hassan, who confirmed the incident, said police have classified the case as mischief by killing or maiming animals worth RM25 and above. The offence carries a jail term of up to five years, a fine, or both, if convicted.
