Kedah to set up 130 meat shops

By CHOI TUCK WO

ALOR STAR: The traditional practice of slaughtering cows and goats under trees

or behind houses and selling the meat in night markets or pasar tani may soon be

a thing of the past.

Under Kedah & #8217;s plan to revolutionise the concept of slaughtering and

selling halal meat directly to consumers, about 130 meat shops will be set up

nationwide in two years while 30 chiller trucks will ply kampungs, housing

estates and markets to sell “fresh, quality and hygienic” meat at affordable

prices.

Operating like butcher shops in the United States, Australia and New Zealand,

these air-conditioned speciality stores will not only sell a variety of halal

meat but also hamburgers, French fries, hotdogs and even korban and kenduri

packages.

“We & #8217;re not out to put the traditional butchers and retailers out of

business,” said Datuk Shazryl Eskay, managing director of Aman Agropreneurs Sdn

Bhd (AASB) which will manage the meat shops.

He explained that very often, cows and goats were slaughtered behind houses,

under trees or in farms during major celebrations without proper supervision

from the veterinary, health or religious authorities.

“There is no guarantee that such meat is certified halal, clean and free from

bacteria,” he told a group of senior journalists from Kuala Lumpur and Penang

during their visit to the Kedah Halal Food Hub & #8211; a joint venture between

AASB and the state government & #8211; in Kompleks Paya Pahlawan, Kubang Pasu, on

Wednesday.

The group later attended lunch hosted by Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Syed Razak

Syed Zain in Wisma Darul Aman before being briefed by Kulim Technology Park

Corporation Bhd group chief executive officer Ahmad Shukri Tajuddin on the

park & #8217;s development.

The food hub complex houses the country & #8217;s largest abbatoir with

facilities to slaughter 400 to 500 heads of cows and goats per eight-hour shift

while its cold storage-cum-chilling facilities can store 1,500 metric tonnes of

meat or at least two months & #8217; supply for the northern region.

The meat shop concept is part of the Kedah Maju 2010 vision to transform Kedah

into a leading local supplier and exporter of halal meat and meat products to

Islamic countries.

The three-pronged strategy is the brainchild of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr

Mahathir Mohamad to ensure consumers get the best quality halal meat at

affordable prices.
