Shipping firms quizzed after 14,000 sheep die

SYDNEY: Three shipping companies have been asked to explain why 14,500 sheep

perished in the heat of the Arabian Sea while being shipped to the Persian Gulf,

the Australian government said yesterday.

Agriculture Minister Warren Truss said new restrictions had been placed on live

exports from Australia to the Gulf following the deaths of the sheep, which had

to be tossed into the sea.

In a separate incident, 900 cool-climate cattle had died aboard the mv Becrux

as they were shipped to the Middle East in early July, prompting a suspension of

movements of southern breeds of cattle to the Gulf until the end of August.

Two separate inquiries were held into the loss of the animals.

Truss said three companies engaged in the shipments had been asked to explain

why they should not have their export licences revoked following sheep and

cattle deaths.

“Naturally I & #8217;m concerned about this group of incidents during the month

of July,” he told ABC Radio.

“It & #8217;s unacceptable and we need to take appropriate measures to ensure

that these things don & #8217;t happen again.”

But he said hundreds of thousands of sheep had successfully made the journey

and Australia had a system to investigate cases in which there had been an

unacceptable level of deaths.

Truss said once the deaths had been investigated the government would also look

at whether the current regime of regulation was appropriate. & #8212; AFP
