A former dolphin hunter is planning dolphin watching

tours at Futo in Izu Peninsula, where some 70 dolphins

were brutally slaughtered three years ago.

This fisherman, Mr. Ishii has been convinced that

there's a better future for the local community with

dolphin watching than with dolphin hunting. And his

announcement of the planned tours, which was made

during this year's IWC conference, was applauded by

environment and animal protection groups and activists

around the world.

But, the Japanese government, which controls dolphin

hunting, has given fishermen in Izu and elsewhre in

Shizuoka permission to catch up to 600 dolphins in

fiscal 2002. And, despite the international uproar

against atrocious dolphin hunting, the local fishermen

are planning the hunt claiming they will kill dolphins

humanely this time.

The major industry to the local people is not dolphin

hunting but tourism and to continue the capture and

slaughter of dolphins will hurt this business, which a

lot of local people live on.

Please send your comment to the below (faxes are

referable since they hate to receive them) and urge

them to cancel the dolphin drive fishery at Futo and

encourage them to promote dolphin watching.

Thank you in advance for your help.
