Sarawak world model for biodiversity products

KUCHING: Sarawak has become the model for the world in the sustainable

development of biodiversity, a seminar here was told yesterday.

United Nations Association of Malaysia secretary-general Datuk Dr Ian Chia said

Sarawak was the first state in the country to set up a biodiversity centre,

implement biodiversity laws and introduce research permit system.

& #147;It has set the pace for orderly research and development and the

production of biodiversity products, & #146; & #146; he said at the opening of a

biodiversity seminar.

Dr Chia said Sarawak & #146;s 400,000ha of rainforest, known to contain over

20,000 animal species, 8,000 varieties of flowering plants, 250 species of

freshwater fish and over 1,000 species of vertebrates, had contributed a very

important if not the most important natural resource to the country.

He said Malaysia, which was one of the 12 mega diversity countries identified

by the United Nations, was also setting up a BioValley in Cyberjaya.

Dr Chia said nine universities and nine research institutes in the country had

targeted to produce 3,000 biotechnology graduates a year, and some 5,000

biotechnologists, scientists and workers capable of managing science parks and

incubator centres in the next five years.

& #147;The country will also host the biggest biodiversity convention in Kuala

Lumpur from Oct 1 to 4, & #146; & #146; he said.

He also said bioproducts have a huge potential commercial value.

& #147;The top 15 crops from developing countries used by US pharmaceutical

companies are estimated to produce products worth US$50bil (RM190bil).

& #147;Bioproducts also provide cures for some of the most dreadful diseases,

including AIDS, & #146; & #146; said Chia.
