Two-month-old baby elephant dies in zoo

KUALA LUMPUR: A two-month-old female elephant at Zoo Negara, the first to be

born there, died on Friday.

The death had come as a shock as it had been quite active just a few days ago,

said zoo director Datuk Jimin Idris.

“We are saddened by her death. Some of the staff cried on hearing the news,” he

said.

The calf, who was blind in one eye due to injuries suffered during delivery,

had been the centre of attention since its mother Sibol gave birth to it.

The excitement prompted the zoo to organise a contest to name the calf.

The name was to be announced on Sept 7 at a ceremony which was also to be

attended by Sibol and her partner Triang.

Veterinarian Dr Reza Singam said its health was satisfactory on Wednesday but

she was less active the following day, consuming only three litres of milk

compared to the normal five litres.

“She also had constipation. Her keeper complained that her feet were trembling

at night.”

Her condition worsened yesterday as she came down with high fever, he said.

“A team of veterinary doctors put her on drips at 8am yesterday but she

collapsed about two hours later,” he said.

At about 3pm, she started vomiting and was in pain, he said.

“She let out cries of pain five times and stopped breathing after the last cry,

which was the loudest. We tried to give her respiratory aid but it was all in

vain,” Dr Reza said.

The calf & #8217;s keeper A. Seevalingam said the 20-year-old Sibol appeared to

sense that something bad had happened to her baby.

“When I released her this morning, she went straight to her offspring & #8217;s

enclosure and looked upset,” he said.
