The operation to hunt and shoot the dogs at a dumpsite near Kampung Selamat was carried out jointly by police and Semporna district enforcement officials. Semporna district police chief Deputy Supt Ariffin Ibrahim said between 100 and 130 stray dogs had been killed in the area in the operation that began on Tuesday. “We will move in again at night when most of the dogs, which hide in nearby swamps, scavenge for food at the dumpsite,” he said. Mohd Nasran Nasir, a local Bajau, died of multiple bites on his face, legs and hands. He is believed to have been attacked by dozens of stray dogs while walking alone on the dumpsite trail at about 7pm on Monday. His body was found by his father at about 10pm while he was returning to their Kampung Selamat home. According to DSP Ariffin, the boy & #8217;s father did not realise his son had followed him when he left home that evening on a work-related matter. Police have met about 70 village headmen and village development and security committee chairmen about eliminating stray dogs in their respective areas. Large numbers of stray dogs are found in Semporna where action against them is rare because of the belief that pirates would raid the town if the animals were killed. <p> ________________________ Your one-stop information portal: The Star Online http://thestar.com.my http://biz.thestar.com.my http://classifieds.thestar.com.my http://cards.thestar.com.my http://search.thestar.com.my http://star-motoring.com http://star-space.com http://star-jobs.com http://star-ecentral.com http://star-techcentral.com 1995-2002 Star Publications (Malaysia) Bhd.
