He said the state of the hill reflected poorly on the state secretariat, which had been tasked with managing the hill. “The lack of co-ordination resulted in unplanned development such as the planting of different species of trees unsuitable to the climate of the hill. “Signs of neglect are obvious and there is litter everywhere. Money seems to be available but they are channelled to the wrong things, like erecting the garish looking decorative lights and an archway that cost RM140,000.” Sahabat Alam Malaysia honorary secretary Meenakshi Raman said it was shocking that despite the gazetting of the local plan for Penang Hill in 1999, it is only on paper. “The plan made very strong recommendations for the authority (state government) to take stock of the hill, recognising that it has important ecological and recreational functions including its role as a water catchment area. Yet, the gazetted proposals have not been implemented,” she said yesterday. Meenakshi was responding to findings by the DAP that showed ill maintenance had turned the once attractive hill resort into an eyesore. It had pointed out that besides the many abandoned bungalows, the archway and a RM500,000 canopy walkway built last year, had been left unused. Former air force technician A.R. Lim, 58, who spent his childhood in Penang Hill, said the hill used to have many beautiful paths. “But neglect has caused the paths to be eroded, strewn with rubbish and over-grown with weeds, & #8217; & #8217; he added. It is learnt that after the DAP findings were published in the newspapers, workers were seen frantically cleaning up drains and an investigation had also been called by state secretary Datuk Khalid Ramli. Khalid, however, declined to comment. <p> ________________________ Your one-stop information portal: The Star Online http://thestar.com.my http://biz.thestar.com.my http://classifieds.thestar.com.my http://cards.thestar.com.my http://search.thestar.com.my http://star-motoring.com http://star-space.com http://star-jobs.com http://star-ecentral.com http://star-techcentral.com 1995-2002 Star Publications (Malaysia) Bhd.
