Kedah & #8217;s logging plans to bring in RM2.7bil revenue

By ANTHONY TAN and EMBUN MAJID

ALOR STAR: Kedah & #146;s plans to harvest logs from one-third of its forest

reserves will bring an estimated RM2.7bil in revenue over a 10-year period, the

State Assembly was told yesterday.

State executive councillor Datuk Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said a Sarawak-based

company, WTK Holdings Bhd, was chosen for the project for its experience in

carrying out harvesting by helicopter.

He said this method was selected as the affected concessions were also water

catchment areas.

& #147;Only three trees measuring 60cm or more in diameter will be allowed to be

logged for every 0.4ha of land, & #146; & #146; said Ahmad Bashah who is State

Housing, Local Government and Agriculture Committee chairman.

He, however, gave an assurance that the logging would depend on approval from

the Department of Environment.

He said this when replying a supplementary question from Azizan Abdul Razak

(PAS & #150; Sala) who raised concerns over the possible ecological impact from

the logging as the forest reserves involved were water catchment areas.

It has been reported that WTK had secured a 121,406ha concession in a joint

venture with the state & #146;s Islamic Foundation on a 80:20 basis for 10 years.

Earlier, PAS & #146; Amiruddin Hamzah, who defeated Barisan Nasional candidate

Datuk Zakaria Said in the July 18 Anak Bukit by-election, was sworn in as

assemblyman before Speaker Datuk Badruddin Amiruldin.

PAS now has 12 assemblymen, Parti Keadilan Nasional one and Barisan 23 in the

36-member assembly.
