Government aims to conserve mountains

PUTRAJAYA: The government is taking a serious view of aspects of mountain

conservation and its ecology and how water resources could be affected, said

Science, Technology and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Law Hieng Ding.

He said there was a need to raise awareness on how to manage mountains which

are important sources of water supply.

Law said this after receiving the & #8216; Kinabalu Declaration & #8217; from the

International Year of Mountain Celebration Steering Committee at his office

yesterday.

The declaration would be presented at a forum of World Summit Sustainable

Development in Johannesburg, South Africa from Aug 26 to Aug 28.

The declaration outlined the strategies that would enable countries to face

future challenges in conserving mountains and ensuring the well-being of

mountain communities and promoting best practices for mountain ment.
