He is trying to come to terms with the death of his son, Mohd Nasran, who was mauled by the animals last Monday. “I hate seeing these dogs. My son would still be alive if not for them,” said Nasir, who along with his brother had volunteered to hunt for the stray dogs the day after six-year-old Mohd Nasran & #8217;s burial near his Kampung Salamat home. The police instead advised Nasir to rest. Police in their hunt with the Semporna district council and Rela personnel, have so far killed over 200 stray dogs & #8211; once considered by the people here as guardians against pirate attacks. Semporna district police chief Deputy Supt Ariffin Ibrahim said there were about 700 stray dogs in the area and the hunt was carried out at night for the children & #8217;s safety. Holding the blood-stained trousers Mohd Nasran was wearing during his attack, Nasir said his son had looked forward to entering Year One next year. The new school uniforms, books, shoes and bag that Mohd Nasran was supposed to use were displayed at the living room as part of the family & #8217;s grieving tradition. Nasir said Mohd Nasran had followed him to town on Monday and on the way back, his son decided to visit a friend. That was the last time he saw his son alive. By evening, a worried Nasir began frantically searching for his son at a nearby coconut grove. There, two stray dogs chased him. “When I looked back, I saw a pack of dogs surrounding something in the bush,” he said. After scaring away the animals, Nasir saw his son & #8217;s body with the left side of his face, hand and calf eaten. He brought his son & #8217;s body home before sending it to the district hospital. Many villagers now choose to stay indoors at night. <p> ________________________ Your one-stop information portal: The Star Online http://thestar.com.my http://biz.thestar.com.my http://classifieds.thestar.com.my http://cards.thestar.com.my http://search.thestar.com.my http://star-motoring.com http://star-space.com http://star-jobs.com http://star-ecentral.com http://star-techcentral.com 1995-2002 Star Publications (Malaysia) Bhd.
