The island is expected to get more tourist arrivals when it attains duty-free status on Sept 1. Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Chan Kong Choy said he would personally attend to applications for urgent infrastructure and water supply projects. Chan, who was briefed on Tioman & #8217;s development during a visit there recently, said he would also look into channelling allocated funds, now held by the state Economic Planning Unit, to the Tioman Development Authority (TDA) to ensure projects were carried out without any hitch. “It would be better that the funds are given to the TDA directly to avoid bureaucracy which could delay the implementation and completion of the projects. “I have also asked the TDA to send all proposals for urgent projects to me,” he said. TDA general manager Hashim Mat Tahir said it was normal procedure for government agencies to refer project implementation to the EPU. Apart from roads, the island was in urgent need of a treated water supply system to meet future demand. Presently, residents obtain treated water from a reservoir in Kampung Tekek, which has the capacity to supply to 500 households while some chalet operators obtain their supply from nearby rivers. Local resident Abd Rahman Ahmad, 40, said water supply was bad during the dry months and he had to depend on river water for supply. “I was told that the present supply of water from the reservoir is not enough to cater to the needs of the tourism and domestic sectors,” he said. Hashim said the TDA and state Water Supply Department were working towards improving water supply to the island. Hashim said the island had enough water but measures had to be taken to tap the resources. He said RM5mil had been approved to improve the water supply system, adding that the situation was not that acute. Tioman has about 3,000 residents. Last year, 243,000 tourists and locals visited the island. <p> ________________________ Your one-stop information portal: The Star Online http://thestar.com.my http://biz.thestar.com.my http://classifieds.thestar.com.my http://cards.thestar.com.my http://search.thestar.com.my http://star-motoring.com http://star-space.com http://star-jobs.com http://star-ecentral.com http://star-techcentral.com 1995-2002 Star Publications (Malaysia) Bhd.
