Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said the environment at Tioman Island would be preserved, with only 10% being marked for development. “I want to assure the public that the Government is as concerned about Tioman and we will take all measures to see that the environment is preserved and maintained. “The Government is coming up with a policy framework on the development of the island and I will be meeting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad soon for instructions on the development of the island,” Adnan told reporters after closing the K3P programme organised by the Information Ministry here yesterday. Adnan, who is also Tioman Development Authority chairman, added that a more comprehensive plan for Tioman was needed to ensure developers of privatised projects understood the Government’s policy on the development of the island. “The Government will not tolerate lackadaisical attitude from contractors when implementing projects there. “If contractors and developers do not follow the guidelines laid down by the proper authorities, Tioman Island will get a bad publicity and that would not be a good start in marketing it as a duty-free island,” he added. Tioman, which has a population of 3,000 people and covers more than 13,000ha, was declared a duty-free island by Dr Mahathir in February. <p> ________________________ Your one-stop information portal: The Star Online http://thestar.com.my http://biz.thestar.com.my http://classifieds.thestar.com.my http://cards.thestar.com.my http://search.thestar.com.my http://star-motoring.com http://star-space.com http://star-jobs.com http://star-ecentral.com http://star-techcentral.com 1995-2002 Star Publications (Malaysia) Bhd.
