New mad cow case confirmed

A Kanagawa Prefecture cow has tested positive for mad

cow disease, the fifth in the nation, although the

source of the infection has yet to be determined,

officials said Thursday.

The 6-year-old cow tested positive for the deadly

disease during a temporary test at a meat inspection

center in Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture, on Wednesday.

Researchers at the National Institute of Infectious

Disease in Tokyo confirmed the cow's infection with

the disease, officially known as bovine sponjiform

encephalopathy (BSE), during a more precise test on

Thursday.

The meat and organs of the cow, born in December 1995

and raised in Isehara, Kanagawa Prefecture, will be

incinerated, the officials said.

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare kicked off a

nationwide examination on cows in November last year

after the nation's first case of BSE was confirmed in

September. Three more cows tested positive for BSE

during inspections.

The first four cows confirmed with the infection were

all born in the spring of 1996 and fed with milk

products produced at an animal food institute in

Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture.

The Farm Ministry is currently investigating the

source of the infection in the four cows, and will

begin tracing the source of the 5th cow's infection

soon.

The government had conducted tests on more than 1

million cows until mid August. (Mainichi Shimbun, Aug.

22, 2002)
