Head of animal conservation of WWF, Dr Dionysius Sharma, said the number of tigers was discovered through recordings of tracker cameras installed along routes where the animals were known to prowl. “We installed 20 cameras and successfully recorded 12 tigers with different stripes,” he told Bernama yesterday. Dr Sharma said a study revealed that only three of the 12 tigers were from forests in the area and the rest were from other habitats. He said the WWF spent some RM40,000 to buy the cameras when it embarked on a project to study why the big cats came out from the forests to attack cattle in the district. “We believe the tigers were using the cattle to teach their young how to catch their prey,” he said. He said the WWF would assist farmers in the area who had lost their livestock to tiger attacks, by building strong multi-layered pens for their animals. Initially six of such pens, each costing RM6,000, would be constructed for farmers in areas where the tiger attacks occurred. Dr Sharma added that a similar study on tigers would also be conducted in Perak and Kelantan. In Kuala Lumpur, PPP president Datuk M. Kayveas said he was appalled by the call by Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat to kill every tiger found in the two districts as “Malaysia already has far too many tigers,” reports CLARENCE CHUA. “It is not sensible to shoot every tiger on sight. If a dog bites somebody, (do) you shoot every dog on sight? If a cat scratches somebody, do you shoot every cat on sight?” he said after launching the Veterinarian and the Law legal workshop organised by the Small Animal Practitioners & #8217; Association of Malaysia at the Bar Council auditorium here. “Tigers are protected species. What is the point of having laws when leaders of PAS are always trying to be above the law,” he said. <p> ________________________ Your one-stop information portal: The Star Online http://thestar.com.my http://biz.thestar.com.my http://classifieds.thestar.com.my http://cards.thestar.com.my http://search.thestar.com.my http://star-motoring.com http://star-space.com http://star-jobs.com http://star-ecentral.com http://star-techcentral.com 1995-2002 Star Publications (Malaysia) Bhd.
