Its public relations officer Ismail Mahmud said the department would try to ensnare such tigers by placing tracker cameras and traps at locations where the big cats were known to prowl. & #147;We will refrain from shooting tigers in the country as the mammals are a protected species and in danger of becoming extinct, & #148; he said yesterday. He was asked to comment on a statement by Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, urging the authorities to shoot tigers that threaten humans. Despite provisions in the Wildlife Protection Act allowing man-eating tigers to be shot, Ismail said the department would only use these as a last resort. & #147;It is not so simple like we can go and shoot them (tigers) even though there are exemptions in the (Wildlife) Act, & #148; he said. He said the method usually practised by the department was to trap such tigers before sending them to a zoo. Ismail also said the department discouraged villagers from shooting tigers. They should instead inform the department so that game rangers can try to capture the big cats. Four rubber tappers were attacked by tigers in Kelantan this year. Three of the victims died while the fourth survived. & #151; Bernama <p> ________________________ Your one-stop information portal: The Star Online http://thestar.com.my http://biz.thestar.com.my http://classifieds.thestar.com.my http://cards.thestar.com.my http://search.thestar.com.my http://star-motoring.com http://star-space.com http://star-jobs.com http://star-ecentral.com http://star-techcentral.com 1995-2002 Star Publications (Malaysia) Bhd.
