Cops: Surrender homemade guns

By SIMON KHOO

SEREMBAN: Members of the public who bought homemade shotguns or pistols from a

26-year-old shop assistant in Bahau market have been urged to surrender the

weapons to police immediately.

State chief police officer Senior Asst Comm I Datuk Ahmad Fuaad Mohd Sidek said

those who bought the weapons could be charged under Section 8 (a) of the

Firearms Act 1960, which carries a jail term of up to seven years or a maximum

fine of RM10,000 or both, upon conviction.

& #147;We detained the shop assistant on Friday after receiving complaints from

traders in Bahau market that he had shot at stray cats and dogs.

& #147;A police party led by Asst Supt Makhetar Yaacob raided the premises of

the shop assistant and seized a homemade shotgun and six rounds of ammunition

shaped like bullets .

& #147;We also seized a homemade pistol, two toy guns, steel and plastic pipes,

a variety of fireworks, ball bearings and other paraphernalia used to construct

the weapons, & #148; he said, adding that the suspect had been remanded to assist

in investigations.

SAC Ahmad Fuaad said police viewed the matter seriously as homemade firearms

could lead to fatal injuries if discharged accidentally.

& #147;We must not let this be the order of the day where people make firearms.

We must address the matter promptly before it gets out of hand, & #148; he said,

adding that police were investigating whether the suspect had sold any weapons.

Those with information are urged to contact Jempol district headquarters at

06-454 1221 or the nearest police station.
