1. Press Release for Hawai’i Demonstration — August 9th

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVISTS TO PROTEST CRUELTY TO ANIMALS IN KOREA

Graphic photographs of Korean Dog and Cat killings to be displayed

Friday, August 9, 2002

7:30 am - 8:30 am

Korean Consulate: 2756 Pali Hwy (ewa side- across the Catholic Church)

Concerned compassionate people will gather at the entrance of the Korean

Consulate in Honolulu to express our profound sadness and anger with the

Korean government for allowing the abuse of dogs and cats to continue, even

though it has been banned.

This is not about human nutrition or health; it is not about culture. It is

about inexplicable cruelty to helpless animals.

ARH is holding this protest in support of International Aid for Korean

Animals founded by Kyenan Kum. Ms. Kum has documented the squalid crowded

conditions at the markets and the deliberate infliction of maximum pain to

cats and dogs, including hanging, bludgeoning, burning and boiling alive, in

the mistaken superstition that torture enhances the health benefits of eating

their flesh.

This weekend will be the third of Bok days during which large numbers of

dogs and cats are killed and eaten in Korea.

Action Alert – Stop the Export of Australian Greyhounds to Asia

When: Tuesday, September 3, 2002 , 12 noon

Where: Outside the Australia House, Australian High Commission, London,

Strand, WC2B 4LA (located on the corner of the Aldwych and the Strand)

Greyhound Action International was established to protect greyhounds

worldwide from the inherent cruelty in greyhound racing, and to ultimately

abolish greyhound racing. Recently, greyhound racing has been introduced to

Korea, exporting the dogs from Australia with plans to create breeding

facilities. This will no doubt boost the dogmeat industry in Korea. Greyhound

racing is already underway in Vietnam, Macau and China, with future plans to

expand to Cambodia and the Philippines, all countries known for dog

consumption. The ultimate fate of these dogs is the same as in Korea.
