Two men in their 30s have been arrested and are now out on a bail of RM1,500 each, said Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) acting director Khairiah Mohd Shariff. She said the department was investigating where the pangolins (tenggiling), were supposed to be sent to for skinning. It is believed that pangolin meat is used as an aphrodisiac and its scales can be used for making a variety of traditional medicines. “The two men had the pangolins which were concealed with fresh water tortoise in a lorry, believed to be from Perak, to be sent to a skinning store, & #8217; & #8217; she told reporters at the department & #8217;s headquarters in Cheras yesterday. The pangolins were confiscated by the department & #8217;s legal and enforcement division at an inspection centre of the Road Transport Department in Jalan Kuala Selangor. Khairiah said the two suspects would be brought to the Kuala Selangor magistrate & #8217;s court for case mention on Aug 26. They were believed to be members of a smuggling syndicate based in Selangor. If found guilty, they could be fined up to RM13,000 or 13 years & #8217; jail, or both. In an unrelated case, 120 hill mynahs (burung tiong mas) were seized by the department at the Malaysia Airlines cargo at the Kl International Airport last Thursday. Khairiah said the hill mynahs could fetch between RM250 and RM300 each in the local market and the price could double or triple in the European market. The mynahs were believed be smuggled from Thailand and bound for Europe, she added. <p> ________________________ Your one-stop information portal: The Star Online http://thestar.com.my http://biz.thestar.com.my http://classifieds.thestar.com.my http://cards.thestar.com.my http://search.thestar.com.my http://star-motoring.com http://star-space.com http://star-jobs.com http://star-ecentral.com http://star-techcentral.com 1995-2002 Star Publications (Malaysia) Bhd.
