Tigress & #8216;forced to hunt humans & #8217;

By LEE YUK PENG

MALACCA: The tigress shot dead by forest rangers and policemen in Jeli, Kelantan

last Friday resorted to attacking humans because it was suffering from a

previous gunshot wound on the upper jaw.

A post mortem conducted by Malacca Zoo veterinary officer Dr Razeem Mazlan here

yesterday, showed that the tigress, that weighed at 110kg and aged between four

and seven years old, could not hold the prey by its mouth due to the wound.

“It must have been very painful if the prey struggled,” he said, adding that

the tigress also had to feed herself and her two three-month-old cubs.

“Since it could not hunt for its normal prey, the animal was probably forced to

hunt humans. Tigers normally don & #8217;t attack and eat humans as food,” he

said.

Evidence gathered by the Wildlife and National Parks Department showed that the

tiger could have accidentally attacked and eaten a man in April.

As a result of that, villages and forest rangers hunted for it and managed to

fire some shots at it.

“The gunshot wound beneath its right eye showed that it was hit from a high

angle, probably from a tree,” he said.

The tigress that had two cubs by then, survived the shooting and was recovering

from the gunshot wounds.

However, it was shot dead last Friday after it was believed to have killed a

48-year-old rubber tapper Siti Esah Mamat, 48, on July 9.

The same cat was believed to have killed rubber tapper Nik Mariam Ibrahim, 35,

in Felcra Berdang B, on May 5.

Dr Razeem said a gunshot to its chest killed the tiger, adding that there were

no trace of human parts in its stomach.
