killing of dogs at Higgurakkgoda

According to the news these dogs were killed just because they were straying

and the Health Department kill 5% of the dog population as a population

control method.They are killing the animals as a preventive measure to

control dog population.They have an on going campaign to kill dogs in

Higgurakkgoda and Polonnaruwa district

Even today they have sent a team to kill dogs.

The Public Health Veterinary Department never kill rabid dogs.

The Police officers shoot them .

It was mentiond that they were killed using strichnine injections.

.They kill dogs all over the island that way and that is a normal practice.

In Year 2000 Dr P.A.L Harischandra Public Health Veterinary Director

provided strichnine and workers from his office at Narahenpita and killed a

large number of dogs in Kotte..It was like supplying weapons.

Residents wrote to the news papers and we did a huge campaign against the

killing of dogs.

Even then they continued to kill dogs using gas.

.We don`t trust the present Public Health Veterinary Director because he

has violated the Rabies ordinance and the cruelty to animals ordinance.We

need to know the rabies statistics and the expenditure for killing animals

and vaccines etc stc.But Harischandra and the Health Ministry officers are

silent.

 

 

I wrote to AAPn in June and blamed the WSPA and Kacpaw of Sri Lanka for

choosing the present Public health Veterinary Director for the formulation

of an action plan for Humane stray dog control for the effective eradication

of Rabies in Sri lanka and forming groups.

They have helped him not the animals.As a result they are also responsible

for these incidences.

 

 

We have to use low cost birth control methods all over the island.At present

we use contraceptive injections in Kotte Municipal area and some areas of

the North Western province.At present we have to use contraceptive

injections to control dog population.Spaying is also very important.

killing of dogs.
