Deadly O-157 bacteria found in horse meat

NAKANO, Nagano -- Prefectural officials here have

ordered a recall of 260 kilograms of horse meat

supplied to restaurants after the deadly bacteria

O-157 was detected in some of the meat, it has been

learned.

Officials said no reports of sickness had been

received following the discovery despite a high

probability that most of the problem meat had already

been eaten. It is reportedly rare for O-157 to be

found in horse meat.

The infected meat had been imported from Canada, and

was processed on June 29 to be eaten raw. Several

restaurants and hotels in Nagano Prefecture bought the

meat, and a small amount was distributed outside the

prefecture.

Officials said it was likely that most of the meat had

been eaten by July 15. The company that imported the

meat had a total of 260 kilograms of horsemeat in

storage from Canada, the United States, Argentina and

Japan. Prefectural officials ordered a recall on

Sunday not only the Canadian meat, but the meat from

the other countries as well.

E. coli O-157 is a potentially deadly bacteria that

can cause diarrhea and dehydration. (Mainichi Shimbun,

July 22, 2002)
